| First Reading: Psalm: Gospel: | Ezekiel 24:15-23 (Ps) Deuteronomy 32:18-21 Matthew 19:16-22 |
Matthew 19:17 And he said to him, "Why do you ask me about what is good? One there is who is good. If you would enter life, keep the commandments."
We spend a lot of time debating what is good. What is necessary for salvation. How we enter into relationship with God. But Jesus says why do you do this. Obey the commandments. That is all. When you fail ask for forgiveness and repent. But stop the endless debate.
Then he says if you want to be "perfect" sell all you have and follow him. That is a commitment that most of us probably are not ready to make. Does that mean there is no hope. I don't think so. I think that being "perfect" is a good thing to commit to, but I think that we have enough to do simply to obey him.
Father, help me by your Holy Spirit to be obedient to your commands. Help me to rest in your grace and not strive to justify my own indulgence.
Amen
