| First Reading: Psalm: Gospel: | Hosea 2:16, 17, 21-22 or 2 Corinthians 4:6-10, 16-18 Psalm 45:11-12, 14-16 John 15:4-10 |
2 Corinthians 4:7 But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, to show that the transcendent power belongs to God and not to us.
I think there may be some confusion with this verse. What are the "earthen vessels"? Some may say they are us, human beings. But then what do you do with the rest of the verse? This is to show that the power does not belong to us, but to God. Why then would we think that we are the earthen vessels?
I think the earthen vessels are the cup, the bread, the water ... The sacraments and that we have as means of God's grace. We can't boast of our power when we confess that God's power and grace is wrapped up in a piece of bread and a sip of wine.
The sacraments are in deed humbling and they remind us as the scriptures tell us of what Christ has done. As often as we eat this bread and drink this cup we proclaim the death of Jesus Christ. There in lies our power.
Father, help me by your Holy Spirit to trust in your power and grace and not in my own. Help me to be a reflection of your love and mercy and to enjoy the completeness of the life you want for me through my service to you and to man.
Amen
