I was Blind but now I See

Mass Readings: March 2

First: 1 Samuel 16:1,6-7,10-13
Resp: Psalm 23:1-6
Second: Ephesians 5:8-14
Gospel: John 9:1-41

John 9:41  Jesus said to them, "If you were blind, you would have no guilt; but now that you say, 'We see,' your guilt remains.

Jesus said that neither this man nor his parents sinned, but he was blind so that the works of God might be displayed.  We are tempted to associate worldly success with God's favor, but God says that he does not judge as we do, by outward appearances.
In the Garden of Eden the promise that the serpent made was that if they ate the fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil their eyes would be opened and they could see and they could be like God.  When the pharisees say they can see and refuse to recognize their sinful condition, they are acting as if they are gods.
Jesus wants us to recognize our condition and our need for God's grace.  In a sense we have to be blind.  If we think we can see and we venture out in our own judgement, we have no remedy for our sin. But when we are blind, then we can truely see.

Father, help me to be blind to the ways of the world and be able to see that you are God and I am totally dependant on your grace.

Amen
