for a proof to the people

St. Josemaria Escriva de Balaguer, Priest (Optional Memorial)
First Reading:
Psalm:
Gospel:
Genesis 17:1, 9-10, 15-22
Psalm 128:1-5
Matthew 8:1-4

Matthew 8:4  And Jesus said to him, "See that you say nothing to any one; but go, show yourself to the priest, and offer the gift that Moses commanded, for a proof to the people."

We often tend to thin that ceremony and ritual is of little value or even considered to be idolatrous.  Jesus himself though instructed the leper to go and present himself to the priest and follow the ritual rules.  Why would he do this?  Perhaps there is value in ritual.  How do we know something is from God?  Ritual may have value beyond what we understand.  For example there was ritual specifically for the cure of a leper, but there was no cure for leprosy.  Why would that be the case?  Well, when Jesus cured the leper we see that this was a testimony of God’s grace.  We should honor ritual that is given to us.

Father help my by your Holy Spirit to honor the things you have given us by being obedient and looking for youto work in and though them.

Amen
